You literally turn your leg just how you said not to do and no good boxer overturns his foot because it takes power out of the hook and puts him in a bad spot position wise especially the longer he is overturned. That being said your hook is a proper hook in any combat sport. A good hook is the same anywhere

Liam, I have a panic fear that at full speed I will hit shin-to-shin with a low kick or, worse hit a knee. I fear breaking the shin bone. Is there a technique to kick a low kick so the shin can withstand it, or how to time low kicks?

It's easy to in Muay Thai when everyone just stands in front of their opponent. Boxers train to hook off the jab, snapping a lead-left hook from the same trajectory of a jab.

Ive seen a simaliar concept in boxing where they say to parry the jab with your back hand and not your lead, because if you parry with your lead you leave your left side open, vs parrying with your back hand allows for you to block the next incoming attack or parry it with your lead hand
